Find me on:

During a moment of contemplation, I delved into the intriguing history of particle size analysis, specifically focusing on the significance of Sieve Testing.

But what exactly is Sieve testing?

In its most basic form, sieving involves separating fine material from coarse material using a meshed or perforated surface. This technique dates back to ancient Egyptian times, where grains were sized using sieves made of woven reeds and grasses. Even today, sieving remains the most commonly used method for analyzing particle size.

Prior to 1930, every lab conducting sieve tests followed its own unique procedures, leading to disputes between suppliers and customers over particle size accuracy.

Enter Standardization

In 1935, a group of engineers and lab experts came together to establish a standardizedsievemotion sieve testing method, resulting in ASTM E-11. This standard outlined the proper way to conduct a sieve test, emphasizing the importance of rotating and tapping the sieve to ensure accurate results.

The process requires precision and patience, especially when handling multiple sieves simultaneously. Despite improvements, variations in test results persisted, sometimes resembling a chaotic circus act.

Enter the RoTap®

Rhe RoTap® Sieve Shaker was introduce. It mimicked the ASTM-11 rotational motion but produced ear-shattering noise, the issue of noise pollution during sieve testing gained attention from OSHA and prompted the development of quieter solutions.

As OSHA regulations intensified, the focus on reducing workplace noise levels led to the innovation of noise-reducing enclosures and improved ear protection devices. New shakers were designed to replicate RoTap test results without the disruptive noise.  Check this video.

This historical journey into the evolution of sieve testing sheds light on a critical process used in the production of various everyday products, such as fiberboard, cosmetics, soap powder, and cement.

I trust you found this exploration of particle size analysis history both enlightening and entertaining. Feel free to share this intriguing tale with others who may appreciate its significance.
