Is Consistency Viscosity? Not really!

The Bostwick Consistometer

We make the Bostwick Consistometer. The Bostwick is used extensively to measure the consistency of sauces and condiments. It has strong application in the quality control departments of ketchup and mustard producers. Results from a Bostwick Consistometer have been used for more than six decades to control the quality of many of the foods you use.

Liquid Surface Tension and Interfacial Tension Between Liquids

Posted by Art Gatenby on Jun 24, 2021 3:34:00 PM

I was musing, the other day on the designs of two ring tensiometers. One of them is called an interfacial tensiometer and the other simply a tensiometer. The plain tensiometer works only with an upward pull and the interfacial works with both an upward pull as well as a downward push. Before I get to my question a couple of definition might be useful.

Surface Tension - Rings, Bubbles, Drops, and Plates

Posted by Art Gatenby on Oct 19, 2020 4:12:12 PM

The definition of Liquid Surface Tension is simple.

It's the force that keeps a liquid from flying off into space.

However, the measurement of surface tension can take many forms, which can be confusing. In an attempt to get some clarity, we have articulated two principle measurement concepts in this article: drop-based measurement and force-based measurement.

Should You Move to "Actual" Surface Tension?

Posted by Art Gatenby on Sep 8, 2016 4:31:38 PM

An understandable definition of surface tension: The attraction force between molecules at the surface of a liquid. The force that keeps if from flying off into space.

Contact Angle and Surface Tension - A Fascinating Liaison

Posted by Amanda Ranowsky on Apr 4, 2016 12:56:10 PM

Contact angle and surface tension. The two terms are never far apart. Run a Google search of "contact angle" right now and see for yourself. You'll often see the terms mentioned within a breath of one another because contact angle and surface tension are two approaches to surface analysis - the study of how a surface interacts with other materials or components. Generally speaking, there is also a relationship between the two measurements, one that tends not to be very clearly explained in other resources. I hope to remedy that today.

Viscosity, Consistency and Surface Tension - What Are These Things?

Posted by Art Gatenby on Aug 27, 2014 12:56:00 PM

Nearly every day we have a question about differences between Viscosity, Consistency and Surface Tension. There is usually a second part of the question;

Dance Bars, Music Technology, and...Surface Tension?

Posted by Amanda Ranowsky on Jul 8, 2014 12:39:00 PM

What do an Irish music technology developer, a British manufacturer of arcade and retro-style furniture, and a dance bar in San Francisco have in common? Given a million guesses, I’d never have thought of this:

How Are Consistency, Surface Tension and Viscosity Different?

Posted by Art Gatenby on Feb 26, 2014 11:35:00 AM

I used to think that liquids were pretty simple things. Is that what you think too?

Not so fast. Let’s take a look at three properties of liquids and see if we change our view.
