Historically moisture was
measured by weighing a sample, drying it in an oven for several hours
then weighing it again. Then technology brought automatic weighing
--direct reading moisture balances that spawned the current range of
Loss On Drying (weight loss - LOD) instruments.
There are three units
featured on this Page:
1. The CENCO Moisture
Balance
2. The Digital Moisture
Balance and
3. The Economy Economy
Moisture Balance.
 The first of these
is the CENCO. This was the grand daddy of automatic LOD instruments.
It measures moisture from 0% to 100% moisture in increments of two
tenths of a percent. It will do solids and liquids. It requires a sample
size of five grams. The sample is weighed as it is loaded.
This instrument
is tough and stands up to abuse of environment and untrained operators.
There is no need for air conditioned rooms or literate

Operations
of automatic LOD or Weight-Loss Moisture Balances are always trying
to balance between repeatable/representative results and quick (short)
tests. The next instrument the Digital Moisture Balance provides adjustments
that permit optimization of the repeatability/time compromise.
The
Digital Moisture Balance is built to withstand harsh
conditions  of
the production floor. Using electronics to weight the samples and to
read and transmit results gives the capability to analyze the drying
curve from printer tapes or directly on a computer. This can be used to adjust test
parameters for optimum repeatability/time set up. Running a test is
a simple three step operation (1. Tare 2. Load and 3. Start). Production
people become competent users in minutes. Moisture analysis can be
made from 0% to 100% moisture at +/_ 0.2% for five gram samples. (Order

This next moisture balance is used with applications that are done
in reasonably controlled conditions of temperature, vibration and humidity
and where operators have an aptitude for testing.
 The Economy Moisture
Balance is operated on an electronic balance the will display moisture
results to .00% moisture. The temperature range for the moisture analysis
is 50°C to 160°C. The moisture meter range is 0% to 100% moisture.
The moisture analysis results can be show as % moisture, % solids or
% dry weight. Test are normally finished automatically when the moisture
